Nelumbo nucifera, known by a number of names including Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, or simply lotus, is one of two species of aquatic plant in the family Nelumbonaceae.
Lotus grows in a aquatic environment, sinking its tough, tuberous roots into the mud. The plants and flowers seem to prefer the full sun. Lotuses prefer the still water of lakes and ponds. They seem to need the mud to get a strong foot hold.
